This year's longlist for the 2013 Man Booker Prize is out:
Five Star Billionaire Tash Aw (Fourth Estate)
We Need New Names NoViolet Bulawayo (Chatto & Windus)
The Luminaries Eleanor Catton (Granta)
Harvest Jim Crace (Picador)
The Marrying of Chani Kaufman Eve Harris (Sandstone Press)
The Kills Richard House (Picador)
The Lowland Jhumpa Lahiri (Bloomsbury)
Unexploded Alison MacLeod ( Hamish Hamilton)
TransAtlantic Colum McCann (Bloomsbury)
Almost English Charlotte Mendelson (Mantle)
A Tale for the Time Being Ruth Ozeki (Canongate)
The Spinning Heart Donal Ryan (Doubleday Ireland)
The Testament of Mary Colm Tóibín (Viking)
I haven't read any. After years of adhering to these endowments I now shy away from books with the 'Golden Stamp of Approval' simply because I found the contenders tended to be about impoverished brown people with missing limbs. There's only so much entertainment in that.
Looking over my bookshelf though, I do notice I have a lot of novels that were selected for the Orange Prize (now the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction). Not sure why that is. Female bias perhaps? Mostly I use these lists to track trends and publishers. Always useful to know who's doing well for that day I might need one.
